A few rim chips mostly on the right edge face,
glaze surface near perfect. Style:
Seasons This is a good tile, I don't really know
anything about its origins but it is well
painted underglaze which is important. Most
painted tiles of the times are overglaze
painted, that is to say someone bought a plain
glazed tile and painted on top of the glaze at
of course lower temperatures than underglaze
painting. So the process is more complicated and
costly and produces a better product, the
pattern is protected by the glaze. Now a lot of the famous name tiles are crap
overglaze painted, Morris & Co., overglaze,
subject to wear or made in Holland and
reproductions of Islamic designs. De Morgan's
lustres, the only red he did, are overglaze,
they are on plain tiles, not blanks, WDM didn't
buy in unglazed biscuit. Some of them are
Wedgwood blanks apparently from after Wedgwood
stopped making tiles. For almost the entirety of
the Chelsea period Wedgwood did not have a
specialist tile department so maybe all those
WDM lustres aren't of that period. But Wedgwood
bought tiles in from Marsden and Webbs which
have the rail grip pattern that people believe
to be Wedgwood so maybe WDM bought Marsden plain
tiles. No one knows really even though lots of
experts claim to. I digress, too much BS around. This is a good
tile, wish I knew more about it. I somehow doubt
I will ever see Spring and Summer to make the
set. I am sure someone has, maybe someone has
them or a complete set. I do not believe these
are from a unique set but from a small volume
specialist studio. Autumn verso has the initials
J.P quite neatly painted and what presumably is
a date which looks like 1854 but is indistinct
and what looks like a 5 could be a 9 and what
looks like a 4 could be and 8 or 9. Verso near perfectly clean, grid grip
pattern, could be Jackson Bros. or Campbell or
almost anyone.
