Two minute chips left edge, surface absolutely
perfect, quite remarkable. Style:
Floral nature study An excellent majolica tile designed by Lewis
Day for Pilkington illustrating the flower of
the Tulip Tree. The design confuses many, it is
seen incorrectly oriented, and is oft called art
nouveau yet it has no style for it is a literal
representation of the flower as it appears in
nature. That in itself is rare for a tile
pattern as most designs are slightly modified,
adjusted one may say, the correct term being
conventionalised where the subject is modified
to fit the available space whilst retaining its
essential characteristics. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed P in
opposing corners and design registration number,
pattern number in pencil.
