Pair of Printed & Painted Bird Tiles

Style: Nature study
Technique: Print & Tint
Manufacturer: William Wood*
Dimensions: 6" x 6"x 2
Date: circa 1895

A good and fairly rare pair of nature study bird tiles printed in dark brown and painted in six bright colours. The similarity with the popular Ollivant pair is quite striking not least the very similar borders. There are some others I have seen maybe half a dozen diferent birds at first I thought maybe Ollivant extended the range but now I am inclined to think another manufacturer sought to capitlaise on the popularity of Ollivant's. This bids previuosly seen on William Wood & Co. biscuit.

Birds are fairly uncommon on mass-produced victorian tiles perhaps as many people had moved in to cities and birds in houses were considered bad luck by some. When living in the countryside in nineteenth century England birds in the house were a common problem, difficult to get out and liable to mess when disturbed. Minton, Hollins & Co. produced more bird tiles than any other many in similar style to those by W. B. Simpson.

Versos unmarked, near perfectly clean.
