Very tiny loss just above bottom left corner,
another two minute losses to the rim, just one very
tiny surface mark. Style:
Nature study A late majolica tile from just before
majolica tiles faded from mass production. A
brilliant head on design of a Bird of Paradise,
an unsual perspective for any bird tile for it
is very difficult to obtain the real life image
to adapt to art. Rare even though less than a
century old, I last saw a good one thirteen
years ago although a did see a reasonable one a
few years before that. Perfect in manufacture
too. I don't think one can attribute any
particular style to the design but it is a truly
great tile that will find in a prominent place
in any collection or installation. Verso very clean although adhesive remants
from a sticky hanger, embossed Richards, England
and pattern number. This is the actual tile shown on page 217 in
20th Century Decorative British Tiles by Chris
Blanchett.
