Minute chips wear to the rim/outline. Style: Art
nouveau A most excellent art nouveau design of a
poppy, strong and bold and yet suggestive of
music, in rich glazes. Very cleverly asymmetric,
the background decoration resembling crotchets
diffuses the asymmetry of the poppy and produces
a well balanced tile. Excellent design work, who
did the designs for Richards is unknown but they
surely employed some very skilled artists. Designed in 1905 this was made somewhat
later, verso is more recent with 'Richards'
embossed - The Henry Richards Tile Company
adopted the abbreviated form of name 'Richards
Tiles' in or around 1931. Quite surprisingly
these later tiles have even richer glazes than
the edwardian examples. Versos very clean, some slight stain,
embossed Richards, England and pattern
number.
