One small, one tiny rim chips, a few losses to
the rim, minor surface marks. Style: Gothic A super design no doubt by Pugin, bold, full
on gothic, early and a rare colour. Made in the
1850s shortly after Prosser's Patent expired in
1854. The design in black in the Mintons
catalogue with pattern number 794, different
colourways had different numbers. The colour is close to the popular chocolate
brown but a little darker, so dark chocolate. It
is printed overglaze which suggests that it was
technically not possible to put it underglaze so
to achieve the required colour required a third
lower 'enamel temperature' firing. The only one we got, it's a rare tile, we do
find a few rarities because we keep looking! Verso perfectly clean, embossed Minton,
Hollins & Co., Stoke on Trent.
