A most rare and fabulous tile from this
major company more associated with technical
excellence in tile manufacture than with art
tiles. This tile, and its
companion, bear a feature unique in my
experience, the background has a cartouche
painted in textured slip over which the tubeline
and glazes are overlaid.
The icing on the cake is the fabulous glazes,
the background turquoise is simply outstanding
both in colour and brilliance, the dark blue ad
green have a mottled effect which appears
greater than that which would be achieved solely
by the background texture.
There were just two of these in the original
installation, plus two similar
3x6 and 36
plain 3x3 with the same brilliant turquoise
glaze. The plains could be used in combination
with this to make a panel.
Verso very clean, embossed Minton,
Hollins etc.
