Chipping bottom right corner, perhaps in part in
manufacture, one minute rim chip, top right corner
manufacturing flaw, two spots of kiln dirty. Style: Art Deco Classical A rarely found tile of a hybrid style
finished in most unusual colours, blue-grey,
purple, mauve and lemon. Classical style was
reinterpreted with art nouveau and again with
art deco the latter mostly demonstrably seen in
architectural settings such as department stores
and offices of the 1920s and 30s, it is good to
see it on a more human scale. Although some more
traditional classical designs are seen on tile
in the earlier part of the decade especially
from Pilkington this is relatively early
classical/deco fusion likely being designed in
1914. New Marsden Tiles Ltd was fomed in 1914
(not 1908 as seen in some literature) and
dissolved in 1920, the pattern number suggests
it was a very early design for the new
company. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed England,
NMT, painted pattern number.
