Condition: Excellent Very small chip mid right, two tiny, two very
tiny chips on the relief surprisingly not on the
boldest relief nestled on the top of the purple
almost dead centre tand on the leaf near left edge,
other very minor marks. Style/technique: Art Nouveau majolica So quite a rarity, you have to have held one
to appreciate it and a great tile for collectors
of the more unusual art nouveau designs. Verso partly smoke stained, impressed pattern
as face to ensure consistent thickness of
clay.

Carter art nouveau tiles are quite rare
and they do tend to be rather stylish. This a
dramatic floral design in high relief one of the
highest of all art nouveau tiles. Just two
colours, I've only seen a few of this design and
all either one or two colours, this with an
intruiging purple-brown that carries a wide
range of hues. Not often coming to market, I'm
sure not too many were sold due to the full
design and high relief restricting places where
it could be used for example it woiuldn't sit
well in most fireplace or washstand frames. Also
such high relief takes away from one of the
import aspects of wall tiling, ease of cleaning
and durability, and then of course there is the
high price for these were expensive tiles. A
complete design but also used as the top of dado
panels and probably fireplace slabs too.
