A rarely found and early tile in the 'arts
& crafts movement style' of climbing,
interweaving foliage with flowers. Fabulous
quality of design and manufacture, four
underglaze earth tone colours on strong buff
clay. The design registration date on this tile
is Christmas eve 1879. Also made as 6" x 6" a
group of four of which from the collection at
the V&A are illustrated in John Catleugh's
William de Morgan Tiles, the V&A entry can
be seen here (link).
Versos slightly grubby, a little rust stain,
printed pattern number and design registration
lozenge.
Two tiny chips mid right edge, a few minute
losses to the rim, surface near perfect
