A very rare impasto design from Wedgwood,
featuring flowers (hydrangas?) and foliage on a
faience quality handmade clay slab. Painted in
three dimensions with slips and with a very
tactile surface, eight colours, all in clays, so
high fired and permanent. At near 3/4" thick it
is a very substantial piece weighing over 5
lbs/2.2Kg and is too heavy for airmail.
Maureen Batkin reports that Halsey Ricardo
designed tiled fireplaces for Wedgwood in the
1880s, Ricardo is of course noted for his work
with Wm de Morgan & Co and one can see some
similarity in the style.
Large chip just above bottom left corner,
slender slice chip left edge top corner, a few
other minor rim chips/wear and half a dozen
surface chips but for the most part the surface
is undamaged, perfectly clean and brilliantly
glazed.
Verso rather grubby, plain slab, impressed
Wedgwood,.
