One tiny chip right edge, a little roughness to
the tip of the rim, other very minor marks. Style: Art nouveau / Arts &
Crafts Easily the best embossed majolica tile from
Wedgwood that I have ever seen. Great subject
matter, the shoreline, shell, waves rolling and
breaking, seaweed in those wonderful shapes that
it creates. Call it art nouveau or arts &
crafts style (not the process) and I don't think
you'd get many arguments because it exudes
style, discussions perhaps for it is certainly a
tile with merits worthy of discussion. Fabulous
colours too, the royal blue and green of the
seaweed are super rich and radiate opulence, the
crest of the waves is bright and
contrasting. Having first seen the tile illustrated in
Austwick in the 1980s I of course desired it but
I was also sceptical that such a great majolica
tile could be by Wedgwood whose claim to fame is
printed tiles not majolica. There are quite a
few errors in the book indeed on the same page
only two out of six are correctly described and
those both from the popular Calendar (Months)
series. It was twenty five years later that I
actually saw my first and was able to buy it, I
think seeking for 25 years qualifies as
rare. Versos perfectly clean embossed Portland Vase
mark and 462, painted pattern number. Couple very tiny chips top edge, a little
roughness to the tip of the rim, other very minor
marks.
