Chip bottom left corner. Perfectly clean, richly
coloured and high brilliance glaze. Style: Floral An unusual floral tile in that the background
is filled with pattern presumably to resemble a
lace curtain, a few designs with such treatment
are noted including those both with and without,
apparently one of Marsden's patents was for a
method of achieving such an effect. So a full
and fussy design quite what one expects of
victoriana but even so few designs were so
full. Nicely printed and glazed, decorated in good
colours including rich burgundy and bright blue.
With the background and complex, frilly border
quite a challenge for the engraver and well
executed. The company's tiles when marked bear the name
W Wood & Co even though they appear to have
moved to and be using the name New Wharf Pottery
as a brand for some wares. A long established
pottery family being noted for wares as early as
1750, their 4 x 5 grid grip pattern is
apparently unique and a good identifier of their
wares. Verso a little smoke stain, unmarked.
