One corner chip, small surface chip top edge,
tiny surface chip left edge. Perfect surface and
highly brilliant glazes. Style/technique: Floral gothic
majolica An excellent floral design well decorated in
five colours the group of flowers set in a
quatrefoil cartouche and so resembling flowers
seen through carved stone gothic tracery. Simple
in form and in the natural colours a most
charming tile. Wade's majolica tiles from around the turn of
the century were amongst the best and for the
most part eschew 'cloisonné' raised
outlines to control the glazes having a more
sculptural bas relief quality. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
