One very tiny and two
minute rim chips, very light/tiny surface marks,
very clean and outstanding glaze
brilliance. Style:
Aesthetic floral A most rare and interesting tile, printed
twice in puce and majolica glazed with a pale
green translucent glaze. Highly stylised flower
and buds perhaps between carnations and
honeysuckle framed by borders and corner motifs
of fans. Wiltshaw & Robinson tiles are rarely
found and they seem to all have been made for
them by Marsden being transfer prints and
barbotine stencil. In addition this is a rare
patent process, so rare that it is the first
example that I saw. The tile is marked 'Patent'
verso, the patent was issued in 1890 the same
year the design as registered and refers to a
second print overlying the first. A number of
floral patterns were 'aestheticised' with new
printing plates adding a mesh effect, Marsden's
patented method enabled doing so with a variety
of mesh types such as grid, diamond, lace etc
without the need to make new printing
plates. Also verso is the W & R swallow stamp,
the design registration number is printed on one
edge.
