A nice picture of a young lad grappling with a thistle in a circular cartouche the outline painted in slate blue and the background glazed in cobalt blue. On a strong buff clay body a little thinner than typical for the date but just as weighty. Most unusually marked with embossed indentification for both Maw & Co and W B Simpson.

Made at the Broseley works so predating the move to Jackfield in 1884.

Surface chip lower right side which is not too obvious as it barely breaks through the border. Hairline from mid right edge a little over two inches on the face and a little over one inch verso. Very small chip top corners, tiny chip and several minute chip top edge. A couple of light surface scratches but for the most part the surface is excellent with a good shine.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
