Very small chips/ light roughness around the
edges and some very light surface marks. Style: Built landscape One of a series of landscapes featuring
historic buildings, the engravings widely
attributed to William Wise but perhaps Swetnam
is more likely. A most charming scene of Anne
Hathaway's Cottage, a picturesque farmhouse in
the village of Shottery a mile from Stratford
upon Avon which was the pre-marital home of
William Shakespeare's wife. Mintons made various series of landscapes,
this appears to be from a series of tourist
destinations, there are several Edinburgh
scenes, some from Warwickshire, the Derbyshire
Peak District and various other sites from
around the country. The majority of these
designs are found on teapot stands rather than
tiles and they were presambly sold as souvenirs.
Other series often appearing on teapot stands
are the ruined abbey and cathedral series
although again they may not be 'a series' as
such as being made for their market in souvenir
shops.
