Pilkington Stencilled Tile

  • Style/technique: Art nouveau/classical floral stencil
  • Manufacturer: Pilkington
  • Dimensions: 6" x 6"
  • Date: circa 1910

A most unusual tile, possibly experimental as it's not often that reds appear on early Pilkington tiles. There are three stencilled colours which with the red/orange glaze give deep red, tan and dark brown. A kind of art nouveau design in a classic layout, in the later Edwardian period the two styles often converged in a single design.

Condition: Very good
Price: £80 (approx $158)
Ref: 02476

Two contiguous very small chips on the left edge and one on the bottom, eight tiny/very tiny surface chips. A little rubbing to the high points and a little adverse glaze reaction in the kiln on the darker stems bottom left.

The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120 dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can be forwarded by email if required.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light. For more details of how we describe marks see Condition.
